The Dance

Meet Raymond and Myrtle: my sweet 80 something grandparents, married for 67 years. I swear they haven’t aged in my 30 years of living, and though I know they would rightly credit the good Lord for every day in their life, I think that dancing every weekend contributes to their youthful glow.

They started this tradition two years ago, and I’ve been wanting to go for a while now. And I really wanted to take photographs of the experience without crashing the party. So, last Saturday I headed to the Elks Lodge with a camera and no flash, in hopes that everyone would even forget I was there…and my plan worked! I danced with a cowboy, ate cake, watched Grandpa and Grandma do the Virginia Reel, and heard stories from their amazingly sweet bunch of friends. Best of all, I saw a glimpse of my grandparents’ 18 year old selves, living life without a care in a world. Now that’s a mental snapshot I’ll treasure forever.
