Little Moments

Hearing words of thanks from clients has been such a blessing as I begin this journey of creating a photography business, and I want to return the “thank you” to those of you who have hired me and then taken the time to give me feedback!

An unexpected, added bonus to the messages themselves has been that, in the past month, three of them contained the same, exact phrase that defines what I set out to do:

“Thank you for capturing the little moments.”

Little moments:  the interactions that happen when people forget I’m taking their picture.   The moments when glances are exchanged or laughs occur.  The moments when smiles stop looking frozen and true personalities are exposed.  The moments in between posed shots that happen so quickly, one may not even remember that they occurred.   The moments that, when put all together, tell the story of you!

Do I believe that there is a purpose for perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera photos?  Absolutely.  We all want those pictures that show everyone at their best, and I know it’s important to provide those to everyone who give me the honor of photographing them.  However, are those the ones that are going to ultimately tell the story of what life was like in that moment in time for you? Probably not.

I’ll use a photo shoot with my own two girls as an example. The purpose of it was to make a Christmas card, so you could say I was thinking I needed some posed shots, or at least ones where both girls were looking at the camera.  The two photos below fit the bill.  They’re happy, they’re looking at the camera, and there is some personality peeking out.

Am I happy to have these images to put on a card?  Sure.  But do those photos alone really tell the story of our girls at this stage of life?  No.  If all you saw were the photos above, you wouldn’t know that:

Harper is a drooling lip biter…

Lily loves Harper with an urgency that often results in one too many bear hugs….

we’re pretty sure Harper still doesn’t quite know what to make of her spirited big sister…

and the daily laughter these two girls share is what makes our life great.

The moral of the story is: for every posed photo, there are little moments in between that are begging to be captured. Contact me at lindseyzovkophotography@gmail.com if you would like for me to help tell your story!
