Emily and Juan’s Wedding at Six Penny Farm

If the theme of this year’s weddings had a phrase, it would be “you’re right where you’re supposed to be, and the wedding of Emily and Juan at Six Penny Farm was just another reminder of that.  For it wasn’t in the original plan for me to be their wedding photographer.  However, I’d had the honor of photographing here Emily’s sister’s wedding in the spring, so when the need arose for her and Juan to find a replacement photographer – ten days before their wedding – I’m grateful to say they thought of me.  Thankfully because I have a “only book two weddings a month rule,” their day happened to fall on a Saturday I was free…and it was an easy decision to break my own rule.

As expected, their day was beautiful, and I once again enjoyed being in the company of warm and kind souls who treated me like a welcomed guest.  But perhaps the most memorable moment of the evening was when we left their reception for sunset portraits.  We headed in one direction towards the sun, but ultimately changed our course to go the opposite way…which resulted us standing atop a hill just as the sun peeked out from the clouds.  I noticed that Emily and Juan’s heights lined up perfectly with the sun, and in a quick blur, I had them come together for a kiss, creating an image I knew was special the moment I released the shutter.

However, I didn’t understand just how special it was until I saw it on my computer at home.  For that’s when I noticed the little rainbow that had accompanied the sun.  And instantly I thought of Emily’s dad.  We all knew he was there in spirit throughout the entire day, but I do believe – and Emily agrees – he decided to guide our steps in that moment to orchestrate a beautiful moment where he could be seen, too.
